Week 10's Featured Link: AERIAL PHOTOS OF VAASA AND BEYOND by Arto Halttunen (highly recommended!) If you would like to suggest a link please let me know at malcolm.pemberton@vaasapages.com ![]() After the Storm - Snowy Suvilahti After our three day blizzard it was finally time to take some photos - I have added them to my Windows Live album. Click on the picture to see them. ![]() Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow! Well, it snowed and it snowed and it snowed, and some say we've had quite enough. However, snow is very photogenic - so here are my latest... Enjoy! Click on the picture to go to my Windows Live Winter Album. ![]() Menkijärvi Airfield Recent snowfalls caused the complete destruction of a military aircraft hangar at Menkijärvi (click HERE for great photos by Juuso Laitinen), damaging two historic military aircraft and two civilian ones. The picture above shows one of the latter, and was taken by Jari Pakkanen from Vaasa Flying Club. Obviously concerned about their own hangar, club members travelled to the airfield on Saturday, intending to clear some of the snow. However the hangar was not in danger, so the club-house roof was cleared instead (click on the picture to see more). If you click on the picture of the glider cockpit in the right column, this will lead to more photos about flying. ![]() Suvilahti's lagoon gets it's long-awaited deepening. Click on the pic to see more photos of this interesting machine as it hacks through the ice, digs up the mud and drags its own skip to the shoreline. Simple but effective engineering, making use of nature to help it along. This machine is owned by Autio and Pöyskö Oy. If you'd like to see the technical specs of this machine, check out this pdf from the manufactures (about 3.3MB - allow time to load - select View and then Rotate Counterclockwise if document appears on its side). Vaasa Steiner School's Extra Pages - We just held our annual Children's Party, and the latest photos will be uploaded soon. Meanwhile, clicking on the picture will lead you to updated pictures of the yard project and party. Please feel free to browse through 'Meidän Koulu' pages to get the feel of an alternative education system. Welcome! The FNS Pohjanmaa, flagship of the Finnish Navy, docked at Vaasa's Inner Harbour. She is currently the only one of her class, and has an ice operating classification of ICE-1A so she can operate all year round. During a crisis the main task for Pohjanmaa is mine laying and acting as a command ship. She also acts as a school ship for the Naval Academy cadets. Clicking on the picture will lead you to her album, where you will also find out her vital statistics. Click HERE to go to the Finnish Defence Forces' official website. Sunday 13th September 2009 - Harvesting Fair at Brage Pictures from the annual Harvest and Handicraft Fair at Brage Open-air Museum in Hietalahti. There were various handicraft stalls, flea market, a program for children, music, sausages, coffee and pancakes. Click on the picture to enter the album (opens in separate tab) Support your local Police! (Click to enter the Finnish Police official site in English). This police van was on display in the market square one Saturday, and I was kindly allowed to photograph its interior. I am a strong supporter of a well-funded, well-paid police force, built up of motivated officers - this is a very important piece of the jigsaw of an organised and healthy society. Of course, an egalitarian society such as we have in Finland tends to breed more respect for one's fellow man, and therefore less crime. Let's maintain this fine balance. What is 'Vaasa Pages' about? 'Vaasa Pages' was born in January 2006 and is unique, both in design and content. I write all my own code so the pages don't look like the 'ready' formats available on the web. 'Vaasa Pages' is about the city I love, and is becoming increasingly more focused on the city itself and places which are within easy reach. It is also about the things that interest me - like Green values, the nature, sailing and history and my kids' school - it is about summers and winters. 'Vaasa Pages' is a name, an entity, and that is why it is an 'it' and not a 'they'. I hope you enjoy your stay amongst its pages, and I would love to hear your feedback. My operating system is Windows Vista. My Office suite is: OpenOffice.org 2.4 My photo editing software is Paint and Windows Live Photo Gallery. The webhost of these pages is: INT2000.net My favourite HTML online reference is: ![]() |
