VAASA PAGES - BACK TO TIMELINE

The Canal Project

1845 - The canal project, designed to improve access to the sea from the ever-rising (Old) Vaasa, is finished, only seven years before the fire which spurred the move to the Klemetsö peninsula.

The photo above was taken during the spring thaw, so there's a bit more water in the canal than usual, so it looks a little more like it must have done back when it was a busy trade route to the sea. The birch trees look quite young, so perhaps there were more fields bordering the canal when it was built.

This picture was taken at the end of July; there had been little rain, and sea levels were also low. The canal wouldn't allow the passage of a canoe.

This last picture is taken from a small bridge a couple of hundred metres from where the canal joins the sea, where lies another item of interest. A curved wall of stones in the sea form something of a barrier to incoming boats, this defence being backed up by the remains of an old shore battery on the north bank.
