560 Million Years ago, a meteorite of unknown size slammed into the
earth and created the impact site known as Söderfjärden. This led me to wonder
what conditions were like in those far off days, so I started to investigate.
The results are truly amazing:
Here below is the earth as it is now...

...and here it is 560 million years ago, according to the US Geological Survey

So where is Finland? It's part of that lower red 'island', which is also on its side compared to now (turn your head a bit and you can distinguish the familiar
shape of Scandinavia).
The continents were far apart, but starting a long process by which they would
eventually come together to form what the geologists call Pangea. They would
subsequently move apart again to their present positions, but of course they
are still moving - apparently North America is moving away from Europe at about
the speed a fingernail grows.
According to fossil records, large numbers of animals - small ancestors to
modern species - already existed at that time, but only in rudimentary form.
There had been ice-ages before, and would be afterwards, but most sources
suggest that at the time of the meteor hit conditions were warmer than they are
now, and early life was flourishing as a result.
