Saturday 19th July 2008 - A pall of smoke hung over most of downtown Vaasa today as firefighters battled to bring a blaze in a listed but unoccupied building under control. The fire, at Koulukatu 47, started in the morning and the road and surrounding backstreets were quickly closed off to traffic. The cause of the blaze is not yet known, but such empty buildings are often taken over by drunks and drug-users, who may have lit a fire to stay warm. Let's hope their remains are not inside. The spectacle attracted a lot of spectators and photographers.
