Vandalism in Public Areas

The idyllic background of Gustavsborg beach and beautiful new bathing pavilion is again being marred by the work of vandals and their mindless damage. The front page of a recent edition of 'Pohjalainen' sported a photo of the 'decoration' done by 'urban artists' to the inner walls of the pavilion. A walk along the seafront nearby reveals more.

Here are two views of the rear of the baseball stadium, and it could be argued that the 'urban art' actually improves the appearance of an otherwise rather ugly structure, made from cheap and indifferent materials.
As you can see, in this context it is hard to say that any damage has been done, but the point is that this structure belongs to someone, and nobody else has the right to decorate it for them without permission (which may have been given for all I know).
However, this temporary electrical supply cabinet looked just fine before being vandalised, and only looks worse for the application of graffiti. Even the word 'vandalism' sounds less illegal than 'criminal damage' - which is what it really is. Just in the same way that 'shoplifting' is no less than theft, and a shoplifter is no less than a thief.
And here we have a new bin and bench (and a comfortable one too, for once), installed only a short time ago and looking quite pristine until some prat decided to paint on them.
OK, so this pump equipment lacks a certain beauty, but it still looked better before vandals tried to destroy it and, failing that, decorated it. The only way the manufacturers could have made it more immune to damage would be to have made it from cast iron and then concreted it into the ground!
This traffic barrier near Kalaranta is, well, a traffic barrier, with little thought given to aesthetics, but it looked smart enough when new. I notice that the vandals haven't had a go at the nearby jail - perhaps the security cameras discouraged them, or maybe they were uncomfortable about their future bed and breakfast accommodation ;-)
And back to Gustavsborg beach, the brand-new changing hut has been signed by the artist - rather silly of them really as police handwriting experts will soon be able to distinguish the style and single out the culprit.
