Bridging the Gap - Part 3 (Parts 1 and 2 below) - These photos were taken on 28th February.
Bridging the Gap - Part 2 (Part 1 below) - These photos were taken on 27th February, only 24 hours after the previous set, and great progress has been made - despite obvious difficulties. The series of pictures shows the tow-truck winching the central bridge section closer and closer and closer to its eastern mate.
Bridging the Gap - These pictures were taken on 26th February and show the pontoon bridge, which will join the two islands, being assembled on the sea ice. It seems a particularly good use of nature to take advantage of the frozen surface. The bridge arch and the first section were bolted together in situ, and then these will be pulled a little towards the other island (on disposable 'skis') in order to make room for the next, and so on. As new sections arrive next to the crane by truck, it seems that the whole operation will only take a few days. I will update as the days go by.
These photos were taken on the 17th February 2008. The Housing Exhibition company again provided a slippery slope for the kids and refreshments for all. This was followed at 5 pm by the traditional Suvilahti Shrove Tuesday bonfire (arranged by the local community). This year it was a little late, but this was due to late freezing of the sea, due again to mild weather.
Nämä kuvat on otettu 17.2.2008. Asuntomessualueelle oli tehty liukumäki lapsille ja halukkaat saivat hernekeittoa. Viideltä sytytettiin perinteinen Suvilahden laskiaiskokko (järjestäjänä Suvilahtiseura). Tänä vuonna laskiaisjuhla järjestettiin tavanomaista myöhemmin johtuen lämpimästä säästä ja meren myöhäisestä jäätymisajankohdasta.
