Vappu 2013 - American Cars parade in Vaasa This year's enormous parade of cars lasted over 20 minutes as it passed over Vaskiluoto Bridge, on its way up Vaasanpuistikko towards the town centre. This video shows the first ten minutes or so.

Carl Axel Setterberg:"A New Beginning" (Pilot in Finnish)
This is the pilot to a film which will soon be made about the Fire of Vaasa, and the subsequent relocation and designing of the new Vaasa. Written and directed by Nik Van-Eckmann, and providing insight into the probable causes of the tragic fire, the film will be narrated, in separate versions, in English, Finnish and Swedish.

Finnish Country Life and Traditions
This is a new album inspired by a weekend visit to the countryside. I have included a few photos taken years ago, and will add more from time to time.

The Dammen Art Centre
One summer Sunday my wife and I biked out from Vaasa to the Dammen Art Center in Sulva. We were pleasantly surprised by both the buildings and the professionalism of the artwork on display and for sale. There are two buildings, one is simply a gallery, the other also houses the curator's studio as well as displaying many more works.

Visit also their OFFICIAL WEBSITE, where you'll find lots more info in Finnish and Swedish. NOTE: It is best to call (06) 344 0417 before visiting, just to make sure that someone is home.

Timo Märsylä in Shanghai
Timo Märsylä is an electrical engineer working for ABB Motors, and he has just started a two-year assignment in Shanghai. He is accompanied by his wife and four children (aged from 9 months to 11 years), and he has allowed me to publish this assortment of photos which reflect his impressions of a culture which is very different in some ways, and yet very similar in others. More photos will be added as their adventure unfolds. The comments under the photos are mine, not Timo's, so faces don't have names unless I know the people myself.

Isokyrö Church
This was my first visit to this ancient church (built in 1304). It was cold and windy, and time was short, but the whole area is lovely and includes a museum and handicrafts shop. I'll be back to take more photos when time and weather allow :-)

The Ocean-going tug Protector at the Inner Harbour.
Details: (Vesseltracker.com) - Type of ship: Tug - IMO Number: 6504228 - Flag: Finland - MMSI Number: 230281000 - Length: 40.0m - Beam: 10.0m - Callsign: OGPT
The load on the barge is a very large transformer which was built in 1975, weighs approx 400 tonnes and has an output of approx 400 Mw. According to Vasa Bladet, after servicing at ABB it is destined for Tuovila where it will help supply the railway electrification project.

Vanha Vaasa Canal gets an upgrade.
Includes 36 photos and two maps.

The FNS Pohjanmaa, flagship of the Finnish Navy, docked at Vaasa's Inner Harbour. She is currently the only one of her class, and has an ice operating classification of ICE-1A so she can operate all year round. During a crisis the main task for Pohjanmaa is mine laying and acting as a command ship. She also acts as a school ship for the Naval Academy cadets. Clicking on the picture will lead you to her album, where you will also find out her vital statistics. Click HERE to go to the Finnish Defence Forces' official website.

What is 'Vaasa Pages' about?

'Vaasa Pages' was born in January 2006 and is unique, both in design and content. I write all my own code so the pages don't look like the 'ready' formats available on the web. 'Vaasa Pages' is about the city I love, and is becoming increasingly more focused on the city itself and places which are within easy reach. It is also about the things that interest me - like Liberal values, the nature, sailing and history and my kids' school - it is about summers and winters. 'Vaasa Pages' is a name, an entity, and that is why it is an 'it' and not a 'they'. I hope you enjoy your stay amongst its pages, and I would love to hear your feedback.
